Reputedly one of the worlds top ten rivers, the Sun Koshi flows 272Km through the untouched countryside and small villages of the beautiful Mahabharat Lekh mountains of the central Himalayas. The starting point lies three hours east of Kathmandu at Dolalghat, and the ending points is at Chatara, near Dharan Bazaar in the eastern Tarai. The Sun Koshi rivers volume increases considerably as it combines with seven rivers to become one of the major rivers of South Asia. The first few days offers fun class II-III rapids and allows time to learn the skills and teamwork needed for the much larger, exciting rapids later on, because from the third day onwards, the excitement and white water builds into large class III-V rapids. In addition to outstanding white water rafting, the Sun Koshi offers varied and changing landscape from terraced farmland, steep gorge, to subtropical jungles. Each night we camp on large sandy river banks with close contact with local village people and rewarding sights of wildlife, butterflies, and an abundance of birds. The final part of the river may be the most dramatic. 10 Km. Of nearly non-stop class IV rapids through the “Jungle Corridor” and climaxing with the “Big Dipper” rapid. Just before the end of our river trip, we float by the large Hindu Temple of Baraha Chhetra and then just around the corner, the hills dramatically give way to the flat Tarai and northern plains of India stretching endlessly before us.

Day 10/11): 10 hrs to Chitwan approx. 20 hrs. at Chitwan, then 6 hrs. to Kathmandu. Major Rapid encountered: Day 2 No Exit and Not Nothing Major – both class III rapid. Day 3 Meat Grinder in the morning and Punch and Judy in the afternoon – both class III + rapid. Day 4 Pre-Anxiety, High Anxiety, and Post Anxiety – all big class III-IV rapids in the morning. Harkapur I and Harkapur II – class V rapids in the afternoon. Day 5 Jaws and Dead Man’s Eddy in the morning and Rhino Rock in the afternoon – all class IV rapids. Day 6 Six large class III – IV back to back rapids through the Jungle Corridor in the morning and the Roller Coaster later in the day. Day 7 Afternoon Delight, Black Hole and big Dipper (aka Big Flipper) all big class – IV rapids during the day. Day 8 Fun class III rapids down to the flat Tarai. The Sun Koshi river gives you the chance to see a very special part of Nepal that is rarely seen by outsiders and along with it, a lot of heart-pumping worlds class white water river action.
